The new plant – built by Shikun & Binui Holdings Ltd., and Global Environmental Solutions Ltd. – will have an annual capacity to process 400,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste which represent 10% of all household wastes in Israel. It contains a mechanical treatment unit to separate recyclables, an anaerobic digestion plant for the production of biogas, and a composting plant. The facility will be the first of its kind in Israel and the biggest MBT plant in the Middle East to date. Commissioning is scheduled for 2023.

It is the third project of this scale for MVW Lechtenberg & Partner in Israel, as the company has already been working on the implementation of a refuse derived fuel (RDF) storage dosing and feeding system with the local cement company Nesher Cement, as well as on the design and development of the biggest RDF production facility in the Middle East in Tel Aviv, with an annual capacity to process up to 400,000 tonnes of MSW into RDF for Nesher Cement.

Shikun & Binui and GES reached financial closure for the new MBT plant with Bank Hapoalim earlier this month. The two companies have won a build, operate, transfer (BOT) tender issued by the Ministry of Finance Accountant General department and the Ministry of Environmental Protection in 2018, to design, construct, finance, and operate a facility for mechanical biological treatment (MBT) of municipal waste in the vicinity of Shafdan near Rishon Lezion.
