Disencouragement for US cellphone recyclers

The Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless competion Act that passed the U.S. House of representatives in late February might hurt the recycling and refurbishment of cell phones unintendedly.

According to the institute of scrap recycling industries (ISRI), the bill makes it illegal for recyclers and refurbishers to unlock cellphones in bulk. That may lead to a competitive disadvantage and may force to outsource the jobs to facilities outside the US where unlocking is legal, says ISRI
