Sims Metal Management has build a state-of-the-art recycling facility at the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal. The plant is expected to process plastics, metal and glass. With an investment of 48 Million Dollar from the City and a 46-Million-Dollar-investment, the facility can handle up to 1.000 tons a day, which is most of the cities recyclables.
The facility will utilize its waterfront location to transport the majority of recyclables via barge. The facility will also utilize newly renovated freight rail on the Brooklyn waterfront for export of processed recyclables. Opening the Sunset Park MRF will remove approximately 240,000 miles of annual vehicle travel from city roadways decreasing traffic congestion, fuel consumption, and vehicle emissions.
Designed by Selldorf Architects, the Sunset Park MRF was built to optimize environmental performance. The buildings are made from 99 percent recycled American-made steel, and were elevated by four feet using a blend of recycled glass and crushed stone from Second Avenue tunnelling operations. The facility that created 100 permanent jobs was opened in December 2013.
