Decrease in world crudesteel production
| According to the World Steel Association (Worldsteel), world crude steel production for the 65 countries reporting to worldsteel was 138 million tonnes (Mt) in March 2015, a -2.7% decrease compared to March 2014.
Worldsteel short range outlook suggests slow growth
| The World Steel Association (Worldsteel) has released its Short Range Outlook (SRO) for 2015 and 2016. Worldsteel forecasts that global apparent steel use will increase by 0.5% to 1,544 Mt in 2015 following growth of 0.6% in 2014. In 2016, it is forecast that world steel demand will grow by 1.4% and will reach 1,565 Mt.

EEB report shows ways of improving Ecodesign
| The EU should make better use of one of the most powerful tools at its disposal if it wants to reduce resource consumption in Europe and bring about a circular economy, according to a new report from the European Environmental Bureau (EEB). The Ecodesign Directive is already delivering substantial energy savings and is allowing consumers to save hundreds of euros on their energy bills each year. ”Delivering Resource Efficient Products” argues that setting requirements on resource use would be politically timely and provide further benefits to both businesses and consumers.

| KU Leuven Chemists have developed a process, based on ionic liquid technology, for the recycling of the metals europium and yttrium from collected fluorescent and energy saving lamps. The metals are directly reusable in new lamps. Compared to traditional solvents, the ionic liquid has a multitude of advantages, including its selectivity for metal dissolution and its reusability.
